Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Troop 50098 collected items for Shelterhouse as part of their Bronze Award project.

Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Troop 50098 adopted Shelterhouse through the Bronze Award Project Proposal. The Midland-based troop made up of students from Central Park Elementary and St. Brigid Catholic School developed three proposals for projects that would lead them to earning their Bronze Award at the Junior level. After the girls presented their project ideas to their fellow troop members and leader, Julie Davenport, a vote was taken and Shelterhouse resident welcome kits won. After consulting Shelterhouse, the girls learned that comfort items such as fuzzy socks and new pajamas were one of the residents’ greatest needs upon intake. The troop got busy collecting within their schools by holding a competition at Central Park Elementary and incorporating the collecting into their monthly service project at St. Brigid. Paper and digital posters were created and distributed to students and staff at both schools. The girls collected pillows, books, games, diapers, pajamas, fuzzy socks and more. "Watching the girls create an idea, develop a plan and then execute their project to help families in crisis, makes me beyond proud, said Davenport, who is also GSHOM Midland Area manager. "This troop truly has the biggest heart and a real drive to accomplish their goals. I cannot wait to see what these young ladies will accomplish as we move through our Middle School and High School Girl Scout years.”

Shelterhouse was grateful for the truckload of donations that were delivered over the summer as the collection was taken at the end of last school year, 2021-22, and the girls enjoyed delivering them.

“Shelterhouse appreciates all donations from our community members and organizations,"said Megan McGee, residential services coordinator. "We strive to be able to provide necessities to all survivors of domestic and sexual violence including those residing in shelter as well as those receiving non-residential services.

Some items that Shelterhouse  is currently looking to receive are: baby wipes, size 5 and 6 diapers, new full size bath towels, toilet paper, paper towel, dish soap, hand soap, liquid laundry soap, new  2022/2023 planners and journals. They also are able to support individuals with pets in shelter and at this time could use puppy and dog food, cat food, cat liter, as well as dog and cat treats. The Shelterhouse resale shop is always accepting donations of used items, and the proceeds from all sales are directly use to provide refuge, hope and healing to survivors. The Junior Girl Scouts are getting ready to hang up their green vests and cross the bridge to become Cadets. Many of the girls have been together since kindergarten and are now in sixth grade. They meet every other week and met virtually during the 2020-21 school year. The bond and friendships formed here are strong and special. Midland can expect to see many more good things from Troop 50098.
